Abstract
Double Shelix and SWE present: Navigating STEM’s Hidden Curriculum to Overcome Imposter Syndrome and Excel - How not knowing the unwritten rules promotes feelings of inadequacy and what to do about it.
Students in science and engineering often experience feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome, which can hinder their achievement. Many of these feelings can be attributed to not knowing the hidden curriculum for succeeding in college and beyond, such as knowing about available opportunities, networking and mentorship norms, and what future employers actually care about. Kayla and Sally, Berkeley PhD students and hosts of Double Shelix podcast, will discuss the how to learn and apply the hidden curriculum for success in STEM to overcome imposter syndrome and achieve your career goals. All are welcome!

Leveraging Your Summer Research Experience for Your Future Career Success
Presentation to all summer interns at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
June 2018
Kayla and Sally discuss about how students can make the most of their summer research experiences, including how to be a good mentee, set goals and plans with your mentor, and finish the summer on a high note to secure a strong letter of recommendation. We also discuss what to do if you feel like your project this summer is not something you're particularly passionate about, and how to put this summer experience into context when it comes to writing personal statements for graduate school or pitching yourself to future employers.
This show was not recorded, but we covered similar topics on our episode Summer internships + rotation projects: Leveraging short-term experiences for your future career success! Also available on iTunes.
